There is a cost for living in paradise

Cocoa Beach Insider Sunrise

I love living in Cocoa Beach and being near the ocean. Gorgeous sunrises greet us every morning. Miles of sandy beaches to walk and explore. Tropical sun on the skin. Ocean breezes. We live in paradise. This time of year, we are reminded with hurricane season, there is a cost to living in our paradise. I am OK with this because we have plenty of time to prepare. Get the proper supplies for the home. Board up the windows as the storm approaches. Plan on where to evacuate if necessary.

You should also have a plan in place just in case something happens to your home. If your home is flooded, you lost your roof, a tree falls on your home, or some other terrible thing happens, you will need to prove to your insurance company what you had before the storm to help with your insurance claim. A simple thing to do is take pictures and document everything in your home. I outlined what you needed in a blog post last year (here is the link). Be prepared for Hurricane season

I am here. Wish me luck!!! Hurricane Irma 2017
You should document your things before the storm approaches

I recently learned from an insurance adjuster some other things to include in the photo records of your personal belongings. Take pictures of the outside of your home. Try and get every side of your home. Take pics of any updates ( I recently replaced my AC and had gutters put on the home). Get pictures of your roof. If you are not comfortable being on a ladder or walking your roof, call a roofer to do it. It is smart to have a roofer inspect your roof on an annual basis to make certain there are no loose shingles, your ridge vent is good, and there is not any leaves or debris accumulating in a valley. Ask them to take some photos while they are up there. If you do not have a roofer, let me know and I will be happy to make the connection.

This is advice isn’t only for someone living in Cocoa Beach, along the coast or in the path of a hurricane. Everyone should have a file online with pictures documenting what you have just in case you need it. Take a few hours this weekend to document and protect what you have.
