Did you know that Cocoa Beach High School has a lacrosse team? Do you even know what lacrosse is? I sat down with the CBHS lacrosse team coach Larry Holmes to find out more about this new sport at our high school. Even though lacrosse has been around for centuries, yes CENTURIES…it just became a part of the Minutemen sports program in 2013. You can learn more about the lacrosse history here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_lacrosse
Coach Holmes became the lacrosse coach in 2017 and describes the game as a combination of field hockey and basketball. There are 10 players on the field for each team. The goalie, 3 attackers, 3 midders, and 3 defenders. The game is played on a 110 yard field and points are scored by throwing the ball into the opponent’s goal. The game is 60 minutes and is divided into 4 fifteen minute quarters of play. It is a very fast-paced game and Cocoa Beach High has both boys and girls teams with the games being played in the Spring. There is a cost for the kids to play. It is $250 per child. They do have fundraisers and appreciate any donations to help offset this. Right now, they have been able to reduce the cost to $150 per child and would love your help to get this cost even lower. If this is a consideration, donations can be given to Friends of Brevard Lacrosse. Please make the check out to Friends of Brevard Lacrosse and these can be given directly to Larry or you can drop them off at my office located in downtown Cocoa Beach at 1 S. Orlando Avenue.
